The Gift of Little Sisters

548110_10152378046545529_278706502_nWhile Gift #11 was my younger sister, Colleen, Gift #17 is my other little sister – Lydia.

Lydia barely missed sharing a birthday with me, and was born just one day before my 11th birthday. She is bright, positive, sweet and has quite the attitude for an eleven year old.

The things that come out of her mouth never cease to make me laugh and brighten my day. Yesterday I was driving to dinner with friends when she called me:

Cait, when are you coming home for Thanksgiving?

Wednesday night, after work. Why?

Well, we’re learning about Europe in history class and my teacher was wondering if you would come and talk to us about Spain.

Oh, honey, I’d love to – but I have to work all day Wednesday and I won’t be home until late that night. I’m sorry! Maybe another time?

There was a long pause, and then she said – with complete sincerity:

“Well, how nice is your boss?”

I just about died laughing, and I told her that even though my boss is very nice, I had a lot of work to get done before Thanksgiving and it just wasn’t possible for me to get off any more vacation time than I already was taking.

I can’t wait for Thanksgiving to see this girl.
